Reduce Stress, Naturally

I recently talked about how stress plays a major part in the health and appearance of my skin.  In an effort to reduce the amount of stress I experience on a daily basis, I have tried and tested a lot of stress relieving methods over the years.   Here are my favourite ways to relax and unwind, I have included some quick fixes and some which take a little more time, give them a try and see how you get on…

TAKE A WALK
My Gran always says that fresh air does you the world of good and it’s so true.  Getting out for a walk and surrounding yourself with as much nature as possible, whether it be in a local park, by the river, in the woods or along the beach, blows all the cobwebs away.

EXERCISE
Whether it’s a relaxing yoga session or an energetic run that’s your thing, getting moving and moving focus from mind to body is the perfect way to take time out.  I always feel so clear, fresh and energised after a workout, ready to take on the world!

YOGA
When I’m really struggling with stress and/or anxiety, a quick yoga pose such as Downward Dog, Child’s Pose or Ragdoll Pose are my saviors.  Each pose encourages deep breathing, which instantly relaxes me. They're also great for just hanging out as you can't do much else!

ESSENTIAL OILS
I absolutely love using essential oils and use them in a few different ways, such as dabbed on my wrists, in a Dead Sea Salt bath or in an aromatherapy burner.  One of my favourite tings to do when I need a quick reset is to dab a few drops onto a cotton ball, hold near to my nose and take three deep breaths.  Lavender is a great choice for relaxing, whereas something with citrus notes, such as grapefruit or lemongrass is perfect for rejuvenation.  I find that there are three moments during the day when this helps the most – lunchtime, after work and before bed.

LIGHTING
Have a look at the lighting in your house.  Most of us spend all day under bright lights, staring at a bright computer screen and I find that's a sure fire way to wind me up.  When it comes to the evening, I like to be surrounded by the warm and soft light from candles or lamps – absolutely no overhead lighting!

REGULAR BREAKS
If you’re dinking enough water, you should need to go to the loo pretty regularly and this is the perfect excuse to get away from your desk.  Grab another glass of water whilst you’re at it!

MEET WITH A FRIEND
Sometimes a good old session of putting the world to rights can be just what the doctor ordered.

CHANGE OF ENVIRONMENT
If you’re ever feeling stuck in a rut, plan a day trip of walking in the countryside or a weekend away by the beach.  Not only will it give you something to look forward to, but you’ll return with a totally different outlook on life.
